US citizens now have two realistic ways to enter Saudi Arabia for Umrah: the tourist eVisa and the traditional Umrah visa. Both can lead you to the Haram, but they work quite differently. Here is a clear comparison.
The Saudi tourist eVisa
The tourist eVisa is an online visa available to citizens of eligible countries, including the United States. Its headline features:
- Multiple entry, long validity. It is typically valid for one year with multiple entries, and each stay can last up to around ninety days.
- You apply yourself online, and approval is usually fast.
- Umrah is permitted. Saudi Arabia officially allows tourist visa holders to perform Umrah, outside of the Hajj season, and to visit Madinah.
- It costs more upfront, since the fee includes mandatory medical insurance, but it buys flexibility for repeat trips.
For US passport holders there is also, at times, a visa on arrival option. Rules evolve, so we confirm the current position when we plan your trip.
The Umrah visa
The Umrah visa is issued through licensed Umrah operators and the official Saudi systems, usually as part of a package with hotels and transport:
- Purpose built for pilgrimage. It exists specifically for Umrah and ziyarah.
- Arranged for you. A licensed agency like ours files the application, ties it to your confirmed itinerary, and keeps everything consistent, one less thing to manage. Our visa guide walks through the documents.
- Shorter validity and typically single entry, designed around the dates of your trip.
So which should you choose?
- Travelling once, as part of a package, and want zero admin? The Umrah visa route is the simplest, your agency handles everything alongside hotels and flights.
- Planning to visit Saudi Arabia more than once in the year, or combining Umrah with wider travel? The tourist eVisa’s one year, multiple entry validity can be the better value.
- Either way, neither visa permits Hajj. Hajj has its own separate visa and system, no exceptions.
One more thing: permits are separate from visas
Whichever visa you hold, certain acts require separate free permits booked through the Nusuk app, most importantly the Rawdah visit in Madinah, and at busy times the Umrah itself, explained in our Umrah permit guide. A visa gets you into the country; permits organise your time inside the Haramain.
Unsure which route fits your plans? Tell us your dates and situation and we will recommend the right one honestly, and handle the paperwork either way.
