Unlike Hajj, which falls on fixed days of the Islamic year, Umrah can be performed at almost any time. That freedom is a blessing, but it also means the when of your trip shapes the cost, the crowds, and how comfortable your days will feel. Here is an honest look at your options.

The cooler months: November to February

For many US pilgrims, the cooler season is the sweet spot. Daytime temperatures in Makkah and Madinah are far more bearable, walking to and from the Haram is pleasant, and prices outside the school holidays are reasonable. If this is your first Umrah or you are travelling with elderly parents or children, this window is hard to beat.

Spring and autumn: comfortable shoulder seasons

March through May and September through October sit between the extremes. The weather is warming or cooling, crowds are moderate outside holidays, and availability is generally good. These months are a sensible choice if you want a balance of value and comfort.

Summer: hottest and quietest

June through August brings intense heat, often well above 100°F. Hotels and flights can be cheaper, and the Haram is less crowded, but the heat is demanding, especially at midday. If you travel in summer, choose a hotel close to the Haram to minimise time outdoors and plan your worship around the cooler early mornings and evenings.

Ramadan: immense reward, peak demand

Umrah during Ramadan carries tremendous spiritual reward, and the atmosphere is unmatched. It is also the busiest and most expensive time of year, particularly the last ten nights, when the closest hotels sell out months in advance. If your heart is set on Ramadan, book as early as you possibly can. We run dedicated group departures, and our Ramadan Umrah guide covers planning the last ten nights in detail.

So, when should you go?

  • Best value and comfort: November to February, outside school holidays.
  • Maximum reward: Ramadan, but book early and expect higher prices.
  • Quietest sanctuaries: summer, if you can manage the heat.
  • Flexible budget: mid-week departures and shoulder-season dates almost always cost less.
